NEC and Siemens joining forces to sell 3G network equipmentdate: June 25, 2001 An NEC spokesperson said NEC and Siemens have signed more than 18 contracts from European mobile phone operators to supply 3G infrastructure equipment. Yoshiaki Ureshi, assistant general manager at NEC's wireless group, said companies involved include 3G license holders in Spain, Portugal and the UK, but did not give details. At a time when operators are weighed down by heavy debts from buying 3G licenses, NEC hopes to triple sales of its wireless infrastructure equipment. NEC and Siemens would divide the revenue gained from providing infrastructure equipment for services such as handsets to companies in Portugal, Spain and the UK. NEC is offering to build networks and providing initial handsets for 3G trials including BT's Isle of Man 3G and DoCoMo's FOMA.
