LG can win cdma2000 3G license without Hanarodate: June 27, 2001 Yang Seung-taik, Information and Communication Minister in Korea said that the LG-led CDMA IMT-2000 consortium does not need to draw in Hanaro Telecom as a member to be successful. Rumours were spreading that Hanaro and LG would share control of the nation's third and finial 3G license based on CDMA2000 standard. The minister said in May that a hook up between LG, high-speed Internet service provider Hanaro and Powercomm would have synergies. Powercomm, which leases fibre optic lines to corporate clients, is a unit of Korea Electric Power Corp. Hanaro, which also has a fixed-line telephone network, is keen for a slice of Korea's 3G market but has balked at an LG proposal to form a consortium in which companies buy rights to its project. Yang also said that his ministry would approve the license if LG Telecom does not form a consortium, but instead accepts equity participation from other firms. Minister Yang, however, opposed the much talked about proposal to slash the license fees for CDMA service, claiming that he has never uttered a single word offering a discount from a total license fee of W1.15 trillion. The government already awarded two 3G licences last year using the W-CDMA standard to SK Telecom and Korea Telecom.
