BT one step closer to 3G service

BT is to confirm today that it is on track for the launch of 3G wireless services in late summer after conducting Europe's first 3G video-call over a mobile phone.

Engineers at BT Manx Telecom yesterday made the first video call on a commercial UMTS network.

The call was made over seven miles, was made and received on a NEC supplied handset palm-sized device equipped with an in-built camera.

Last month BT said a software glitch on handoff problem would delay the launch of its 3G service on the island by three months until "later summer or the beginning of autumn".
