KTF Launches Rival cdma2000 1X EV-DO Servicedate: June 12, 2002 - source: BWCS KTF, the second largest mobile service provider in South Korea, has launched a commercial cdma2000 1X EV-DO (evolution data optimised) service to rival that on offer from SK Telecom. According to KTF, its new service, like that of SK Telecom, compares favourably with the data transmission speeds of up to 384kbps, which supporters of W-CDMA say are only possible on the wideband version of CDMA. Earlier this year SK Telecom introduced its cdma2000 1X EV-DO service. According to the company the faster service is available in 16 Korean cities and can support multimedia applications such as video streaming services. At the end of 2001 there were 2.68 million cdma2000 1X subscribers in Korea, a figure that is forecast by Morgan Stanley to rise to over 17 million by 2003. By early next year cdma2000 1X EV-DO services are also due to be rolled out by Sprint PCS in the US and KDDI in Japan. KTF has rolled out its services in the Seoul area and in nine other cities, which are being used as World Cup venues across the country. Samsung and LG Electronics are providing the cdma2000 1X EV-DO handsets and the operator hopes to have some 800,000 subscribers for its new service by the end of this year – from a total expected subscriber base of 10.7 million people. KTF says it plans invest 493 billion won in its cdma2000 1X network this year out of a total annual capital budget of 1.1 trillion won.
