1xEV-DV gets TIA, 3GPP approvaldate: June 12, 2002 Both the 3GPP2 and TIA have approved the cdma2000 1xEV-DV for publication. The CDMA Development Group is now reported to have submitted the standard to the ITU for formal approval as an IMT-2000 3G global standard. "cdma2000 leads in 3G subscriber numbers, product availability, services and technology innovation," claimed Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "The TIA's approval of CDMA2000 1xEV-DV further strengthens the industry's recognition of cdma2000 as the standard of choice for 3G," he added. The CDG claims that the CDMA2000 1xEV-DV will provide integrated voice with simultaneous packet data services at speeds of up to 4.8 Mbps, while being backward compatible with cdmaOne and cdma2000 1x. This is the third such 3G approval for the CDMA standard, which includes cdma2000 1x and cdma2000 1xEV-DO. The subject of cdma2000 1x as a 3G standard is the subject of uncertainty in the industry, those in favour of the cdmaOne evolution say cdma2000 1x in its current form is 3G, whilst those who are opting for the W-CDMA standard say it is not. 3G Bulletin believes that cdma2000 1x does not offer 3G speeds as yet and should really be classified as 2.75G until it reaches the ITU speed specifications.
