Morphics Technology Unveils First Wireless Signal Processor For 3G Cellular Networksdate: June 13, 2002 Morphics Technology, developer of efficient, high-performance wireless signal processors (WSPs) for 3G basestations and terminals, today announced its integrated hardware/software architecture for baseband processing in 3G basestations. The new architecture combines a high-level programming interface -- the Virtual Machine Interface (VMI) -- with a specialized wireless signal processor called the 3G Basestation Processor (3G-BP). The highly efficient 64-channel processor utilizes an innovative and programmable distributed dataflow architecture specifically engineered for 3G baseband processing. To support efficient software development for the 3G Basestation Processor, the VMI offers developers of 3G basestations an object-oriented programming interface to enable the rapid design of channel cards that offer significantly lower cost per mobile user. Morphics' new 3G integrated hardware/software architecture directly addresses the cost reduction demands of basestation manufacturers while increasing the efficiency and capabilities of their network equipment. The new 3G standards are based upon technology that demands up to 100 times greater signal processing complexity over that needed in current 2G networks. Escalating competition in the market for 3G network equipment continues to drive the necessity for cost reduction efforts directed at 3G basestations. Also growing in importance are capabilities that increase the efficiency of these networks like improved radio link performance and the flexible provisioning of services between high-density voice and high-speed data traffic. Basestations incorporating the 3G-BP solution enable equipment vendors to build in proprietary performance differentiation and to provide flexible provisioning of these 3G services. Morphics' multi-standard hardware and software platform cost-effectively delivers the required high levels of signal processing performance in a flexible manner. "Our customers have emphatically told us that the number one issue in the design of their 3G basestation equipment is cost," stated Ravi Subramanian, president of Morphics Technology. "The 3G-BP delivers the significant cost advantage required for their current and next generation 3G basestation channel cards. And because of our high levels of flexibility and programmability customers can build in the radio-link and network performance differentiation that they need to be competitive."
