The UMTS Forum and 3G Americas join forces to build global uptake of 3G

date: June 13, 2002

The UMTS Forum, the independent body which promotes the global uptake of 3G mobile systems and services, and 3G Americas, a new wireless trade organisation focused on the success of TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS throughout the Americas, announced that they have signed a Letter of Understanding to promote the path for successful evolution to 3G for mobile operators.

The partnership between the UMTS Forum and 3G Americas marks the dedication of both parties to ensure the realisation of UMTS as an evolutionary road for TDMA and GSM operators. They will appropriately support each other globally through educational and promotional activities to increase the visibility of the 3G market and services, strengthen the estimated 3G market opportunity and improve industry confidence in the next generation of mobile services.

Both the UMTS Forum and 3G Americas maintain a strong position in the wireless arena, sharing the aim of educating and advocating the seamless development of next generation mobile services to operators, vendors, regulatory bodies and other key players in the mobile community.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Bernd Eylert, Chairman, the UMTS Forum said, "By working with 3G Americas we will strengthen the global promotion of 3G by providing a combined voice to educate the market over a wide geographical area. We will work together to discuss and develop 3G strategies that are of particular interest to both organisations and that are mutually beneficial but will continue to work independently of each other as well."

Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President, 3G Americas emphasised the importance this Letter of Understanding represents: "3G Americas welcomes the opportunity to cooperate with the UMTS Forum. We share similar aims and objectives including improved industry confidence and visibility in migration to 3G. Though 3G Americas is focused on the GSM evolution in North, Central and South America - global interoperability is essential for providing a successful third generation deployment. We now have a strengthened voice to accomplish this."
