Wireless LANs Are Overtaking 3G Says Parthusdate: June 13, 2002 - source: BWCS Wireless chipset developer Parthus has thrown its weight behind wireless LAN technology claiming that it is maturing faster than 3G. US-based Parthus has shifted its focus from developing chipsets for 3G devices to producing platforms based on the 802.11 family of wireless LAN standards. The company has just unveiled its latest 802.11 chipset for integration in laptops and PDAs, which it claims will significantly reduce power consumption and processor costs. Parthus believes that the adoption of W-LANs in public access hotspot locations, in offices and within the home for shared broadband access, will all drive the take-up of 802.11 enabled devices over the coming months. According to the BWCS report Wireless LANs and the Threat to Mobile Revenues the number of W-LAN hotspots will grow to more than 114,000 by 2006 by which time hotspot services will account for 12% of all wireless data revenues. In a further development a group of major US companies including IBM is rumoured to be interested in cooperating to deploy a nationwide W-LAN network using 802.11a technology. As no further details of the scheme have been revealed it is unclear to what extent the new network would compete or cooperate with existing cellular data offerings. An IBM spokesman was reported in the InfoWorld newswire as stating that the company did not expect existing independent hotspot operators and aggregators to survive in the long-term.
