M1 makes Singapore's first packet data call over commercial 3G network infrastructuredate: June 18, 2002 The first live third-generation packet data call utilising commercial 3G infrastructure in Singapore was made by M1 today. It marked a significant phase of the roll-out programme for the WCDMA network that M1 started about a year ago. The WCDMA network is expected to be fully completed and ready for commercial launch in the second half of next year. Factors such as the availability of 3G handsets will influence the eventual launch date. M1’s Chief Executive Officer, Neil Montefiore, made the 3G data call at the official opening of the Nokia Connection, a showcase of next generation technology presented by the world leader in mobile communications. “M1 is making good progress with its 3G-development programme and is committed to a successful roll out within the announced time frame. Together with our investments in other related R&D projects such as the Application Developers Community, Future Lab and Wireless Intellect Labs, we are confident of making a strong contribution to Singapore’s ambitions of becoming a global hub of excellence for wireless technology,” said Mr Montefiore. M1 signed the contract for the supply of 3G technology and infrastructure with long-standing technology partner, Nokia, in December 2000. It began 3G deployment soon after being awarded a 3G licence by the Infocomms Development Authority of Singapore in April 2001. “Nokia is on track with its roll-out of next generation technology,” said Mr James Lin, Vice President and General Manager, Business Development, Nokia Networks Asia Pacific.
