Spreading the word on EDGEdate: June 21, 2002 The number of EDGE users worldwide is set to reach 331.4 million by the year 2007, according to predictions by consultants ARC. Their report, The Future of EDGE – key findings, will be presented to the fifth meeting of the EDGE Operators Forum at CommunicAsia in Singapore on June 19. The EDGE Operators Forum is a global industry partnership of major operators and vendors that are committed to deploying EDGE as part of their 3G service strategies for evolving 2G wireless systems. It works in close cooperation with the two major GSM associations – GSA and GSMA. The forum provides an opportunity for operators and vendors to get together and the seminar in Singapore will give operators a chance to hear from major vendors about current EDGE business strategies, availability and advantages. Bo Langemark, responsible for Ericsson’s EDGE marketing program and a member of the EDGE Operators’ planning team, says the forum meetings are important because they show the broad backing throughout the industry for EDGE, with representatives attending not only from Ericsson but also from Nokia, Nortel, Siemens and Motorola. “It is an overwhelming force saying that EDGE is coming,” he says, “And this means something.” The key findings of the ARC report show that the EDGE user base will reach 164 million in Europe and 108.8 million in North America by 2007. The shipments of EDGE-enabled handsets will top 201.6 million at the same time. Two years earlier, in 2005, the EDGE Average Revenue Per User will have reached US$48.99. Langemark expects that EDGE will be implemented in most GSM operator networks worldwide within a couple of years. The figures from ARC are impressive and give further ammunition to those who believe strongly in the potential of EDGE. “There is still a need to spread the word about EDGE,” says Langemark. “People need to know that EDGE is here and that it is multi-vendor and multi-operator supported.”
