M1 on track for H2 03date: June 25, 2002 Singapore's M1 has said that it is on course to meet plans to launch 3G in H2 next year and should the services are expected to start adding to revenues in 2004. The operator has just claimed to have completed the island state's first live 3G packet data call using commercial 3G infrastructure. M1's CEO, Neil Montefiore, said: "We are relatively optimistic about the uptake of 3G, which depends on the uptake of GPRS, so it will be evolutionary, but we expect small revenue contributions from 3G in 2004." The company's view seems at odds with SingTel Mobile, which recently postponed its 3G network supply contract, citing the lack of technology stability and market maturity. M1 said that it still expects to start 3G customer trials by the end of this year and launch commercial services in June 2003, more than a year ahead of its license deadline. "M1 is making good progress with its 3G-development programme and is committed to a successful roll out within the announced time frame," said the CEO. Montefiore also said that he believes the growth of MMS will help increase widespread interest in 3G. "MMS is going to be very compelling and emotional, allowing people to communicate with their peers, not just in text, but also in images," he revealed. "But MMS will be carried on the GPRS network, and with the limited spectrum available, there will be a need for 3G."
