3G - Coming To a Street Corner Near You
June 3, 2003 - source: BWCS
As a growing number of mobile operators add erotic services to their
3G content rosters the sex industry is also eyeing the next-generation
technology as the next frontier in personal services. According to reports
in the South China Morning Post the Hong Kong police force have discovered
that pimps are using photo-messaging handsets to sell the services of
prostitutes.
At present this practice involves using the handsets to show digital
images of the girls to potential clients but as photo and video messaging
becomes more ubiquitous and affordable the Hong Kong police fear that
pimps will use the technology to send images directly to the handsets
of potential customers.
The ability of 2.5G and 3G to combine the personal nature of mobile services
with the easy accessibility of content via the internet has marked them
out as natural channels for adult services. Mobile operators including
Hutchison 3G (UK), E-Plus and Virgin Mobile have already added adult services
to their platforms and several US operators are thought to be looking
at premium SMS adult text-chat offerings.
Porn baron Charles Prast recently stated that he expected the early success
of erotic content on the internet to be repeated in the 3G arena. Prast,
who is CEO of Private Media Group, predicts that adult services could
initially account for up to 80% of mobile data traffic over 3G networks.
Industry estimates as the value of the mobile porn market vary from US$4
billion up to US$12 billion by 2006.
