DoCoMo to transfer all 2G users to FOMA by 2010

June 5, 2003

NTT DoCoMo will switch its business focus to its FOMA 3G service within two to three years, with the ultimate aim of transferring all of its mobile phones to 3G by 2010, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

In an interview with the paper, DoCoMo President Keiji Tachikawa said that by reviewing its fee structure to favor 3G users and drastically scaling back investment into its 2G models, the firm hopes to raise the ratio of 3G users to about half of its total mobile phone users in about two to three years.

DoCoMo had 421,000 3G subscribers as of the end of April. Tachikawa said he hopes to increase the number of subscribers to more than 1-million by the end of the year. The current number of total DoCoMo users is estimated at about 40 million.

Although fee reductions resulted in slowing parent revenue growth last fiscal year ended March 2003, Tachikawa hopes the company will continue reducing fees in an effective way. He said that it is a good sign that the company is increasing profits while giving back to customers.
