HW is suing KPN over non payment
June 11, 2003
Hutchison Whampoa, controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing said
Wednesday that it is suing UK 3G partner Royal KPN NV, because the Dutch
telecom company refused to pay its share of a loan requested by its UK
3G wireless venture- 3 UK.
"Hutchison has instituted proceedings in London against KPN for breach
of contract, and to claim damages for that breach," a spokeswoman at Hutchison
said. "As proceedings have already been instituted, it would not be appropriate
for us to comment further on this matter."
In March, 3 UK, the company's 65% owned British telecom unit, requested
£1 billion in added financing from its shareholders.
Hutchison immediately said it would shell out £650 million in funds,
while Japan's NTT DoCoMo, which owns 20%, agreed to advance £200
million in April. KPN Mobile, which owns 15%, said, however, that "after
careful consideration," it wouldn't provide the £150 million in
funding sought by Hutchison 3G.
3 UK, has set itself a target of 1 million subscribers each in the U.K.
and Italy by the end of the year.
Hutchison Whampoa would probably walk away from its 3G investment if
it was not successful by 2005-06, according to a European investment bank.
