NTT DoCoMo to Expand FOMA 3G Service Areas
June 13, 2003
NTT DoCoMo announced that service area for its FOMA third-generation
(3G) mobile phone will be expanded to an additional 43 towns and villages
in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region* on June 14, 2003 and to 218 other towns
nationwide by the end of this month. As a result, the expansion will raise
FOMA coverage to 98% of populated areas in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region
and nationwide coverage to some 93% of the population.
NTT DoCoMo will also expand the number of FOMA network base stations
in existing service areas. Base stations in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region,
including inside buildings and underground areas, will increase to 2,500
and nationwide they will increase to 7,000. The figures stood at 2,200
and 6,300, respectively, as of end-March 2003.
DoCoMo also announced that WORLD WING, the FOMA international roaming
service that enables subscribers to use their same mobile phone numbers
overseas, will be expanded by five countries to a total of 58 on June
16, 2003. The new countries are Brazil, Canada, China, Pakistan and Vietnam.
With the addition, WORLD WING will cover approximately 92% of the global
destinations frequented by Japanese travelers.
The companies will continue to enhance its FOMA service both at home
and abroad. FOMA is scheduled to reach 99% of Japan's population by end-March
2004 and virtually the entire population by end-March 2005. The company's
In-building Mobile Communication System (IMCS) will be operating in some
1,600 buildings within existing service areas by end-March 2004. Overseas,
DoCoMo will continue increasing the number of countries for the WORLD
