Nokia expects 3G phone sales to skyrocket in 2004

Finnish handset maker, Nokia, only expected sales of 3G mobile phones to skyrocket in the second half of 2004, the head of the company's hand set unit said on Monday.

Matti Alahuhta, the president of Nokia Mobile Phones, said phone makers should be delivering large volumes of 3G models to 3G operators by late next year.

He said the world's biggest phone maker expected its share of the 3G market to mirror its overall share of the current cell phone market, which is about 35 percent.

Last week Nokia started shipment of its first WCDMA 3G phone, the dual-mode Nokia 6650.

Nokia has said it expects about 20 WCDMA networks to be in commercial operation worldwide by the end of this year.
