HK CSL to delay launch until next year
June 17, 2003
Hong Kong's CSL, the mobile operator wholly owned by Australia's Telstra
and Hong Kong's No2 mobile carrier, said the price war in the mobile voice
market has delayed the launch of its 3G services until early next year
- at least six months behind its original schedule.
He said that, with high handset costs, operators would have very thin
profit margins if they did not charge higher monthly tariffs for 3G services.
"If there is only a very small price differential between 2G and
3G services, the launch of 3G services won't be justified [at such low
profit margins],'' Ng said.
The company said in December last year it planned to launch a 3G service
phase by phase from the third quarter of this year.
Of the four 3G licence holders in Hong Kong, only Hutchison Whampoa has
committed itself to launching the high-speed broadband technology, likely
to be this month.
The other three operators - Smartone, Sunday and CSL - have cited problems
such as lack of content and difficulties with the technology that would
allow seamless data transfer between 2G and 3G networks as reasons for
their wait-and-see attitude.
