Disney Draws Up Vodafone Deal
June 18, 2003 - source: BWCS
Walt Disney group has stepped up its drive into mobile multimedia services
via a partnership deal with Vodafone. The US animation giant will supply
Vodafone with content from its films and cartoons for the mobile operator’s
3G platform. Mobile services incorporating Disney content will include
ringtones, logos, movie trailers, and themed multimedia messages.
Disney is hoping to repeat in Europe the success of its Japanese internet
subsidiary, which has signed up 3.4 million mobile internet subscribers
over the past two years. As well as Vodafone the company has already closed
content deals with Orange and T-Mobile and is also thought to be on the
verge of a partnership with Spain’s Telefonica Moviles.
From the mobile operators’ perspective a partnership with Disney opens
up significant opportunities in terms of pay-per-download multimedia services.
For the US media giant 3G services are just one part of a wider strategy
to bring its rich content to a broadband internet audience. In addition,
having direct access to millions of mobile users will create huge marketing
opportunities for Disney in terms of promoting forthcoming movies.
