TIM to rolls out EDGE

Italian mobile operator Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) could be set to upgrade its network to provide 3G services using a cheaper technology to persuade consumers to upgrade faster.

TIM, a subsidiary of telecoms giant Telecom Italia, will be the first European operator to use the Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution technology instead of the standard, more expensive, Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA).

TIM plans to use the technology to offer video and multimedia services in remote areas of the country where it cannot justify rolling out the more capable WCDMA. Although most European operators use WCDMA, roll-out is slow as companies try to conserve cash and technology problems.
