Vodafone Hopes to Repeat Live! Success with 3G

June 24, 2003 - source: BWCS

In a major management reshuffle, Vodafone is moving Thomas Geitner, who spearheaded the launch of its highly successful Vodafone Live! service, to head up a new business unit charged with the introduction and operation of 3G network services. Currently CEO of Global Products and Services, Geitner will become CTO and head of Group Technology & Business Integration from July 1.

The move is seen as part of the operator’s increased emphasis on data services and content delivery, the concept behind Vodafone Live!, which picked up one million customers in just five months. In a keynote speech at the FT World Mobile Communications Conference in London last week, Geitner stressed the importance of offering the customer a rich content-based experience: “With every Vodafone Live! phone we sell today, we are generating more usage on messaging, on games, on content and ring tones. Vodafone Live! is a real demand creator.....It is obviously based on WAP and GPRS at this stage but we do not talk about that to the customer.”
