3HK forced Nokia to rip out all 3G sites
June 24, 2003
News is spreading that Hutchison 3G Hong Kong (3HK) forced Nokia to rip
out all of its 720 WCDMA base stations worth £30,000 each in Hong
Kong just 4 weeks before commercial launch of its 3G network.
Exact reasons for the abrupt action were not clear but it was said to
be caused by sluggish installation by Nokia, equipment testing taking
too long and incomparable 3GPP specifications between Nokia networks and
NEC handsets. The commercial launch date was due to be in late-June, but
it is looking unlikely to be live until mid-August.
Siemens and NEC have been brought in to replace the equipment and resolve
the mess left behind by Nokia.
The launch date was already delayed due to the SARS virus hitting Hong
Kong when overseas network engineers had to be departed from the city
and the installation was left idle for 2 weeks.
3HK did not wished to comment on this matter.
Around 17,000 users in Hong Kong have registered on the 3HK website to
shown their interest in the 3G service.
Relations between Hutchison and Nokia have not always gone well. The
situation got bitter when the 3G network rollout by Nokia was three months
after NEC/Siemens was up and running for Hutchison 3G UK.
