Malaysia ready for trial
June 30, 2003
Telekom Malaysia is said to be on schedule to carry out field trials
on 3G high-speed mobile Internet services tomorrow although some of its
vendors may only be ready later in July.
While Telekom may be raring to go ahead with its field trials this year,
Maxis Communications appears to be taking its time and prefers not “to
rush into trials.''
It is believed that Maxis is currently busy evaluating close to a RM1bil
infrastructure tender award to suppliers for its 2G, 2.5G and 3G networks.
Only Telekom and Maxis via UMTS (M) Sdn Bhd have been assigned the 3G
spectrums by the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission earlier
this year.
Sources said that two of the eight suppliers/vendors that responded to
Telekom calls for field trials had dropped off since, leaving six to do
trials in the Klang Valley.
The six are Alcatel, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies of Taiwan, NEC of
Japan, Nokia, and Nortel. The two that dropped off were Motorola and Samsung,
sources said.
Although several of the six vendors are ready for the first call on 3G
platforms by July 1, there are others still struggling to put the system
for the first call.
Any delay by its vendors won't affect its plans for 3G because there
is really no hurry to offer 3G services when applications for it are still
yet to be fully developed and the full implementation of 2.5G is still
in its infancy stages.
Telekom is believed to have designated several areas for each vendor
according to where their office is. These areas are the location for the
mobile switching centre (MSC).
Alcatel will provide 3G trials to the PJ central area; Ericsson will
concentrate on Cyberjaya and Putrajaya areas since its office is located
in Cyberjaya; Huawei has been assigned to the KL Tower area. NEC will
concentrate on the Semarak and Wangsa Maju areas; Nokia on Serdang; and
Nortel in Subang Jaya.
The trial will be for an 18-month period with provisions to extend for
another six months at the request of Telekom. Vendors are required to
install a network complete with one MSC, seven base stations, applications
and provide 500 units of 3G terminals for trial purposes.
