KDDI offers cheaper 3G data plan

June 17, 2004

In a bid to counter rival NTT DoCoMo's introduction of unlimited data usage for 3,900 yen, KDDI will launch a new data communications pricing plan aimed at low usage users. KDDI was the first mobile operator in Japan to offer unlimited data transfer on its 3G 'au' service for 4,200 yen per month back in 2003.

Starting from August, low data usage customers on KDDI can subscribe to the 2,100 yen plan that includes "40,000 packets" of data transfer.

Customers which go over the limit will be charged for the extra data transmitted but the monthly charge will not exceed the upper limit of 4,200 yen a month.

KDDI hopes the new plan will be able to compete with DoCoMo's flat-rate plan of 3,900 yen per month that offers unlimited data volume on its 3G FOMA mobile phone service.
