Spirent supports W-CDMA region 2 testing

June 30, 2004

Spirent Communications announced a automated RF test capability for W-CDMA terminals that are designed for use in the Region 2 band. This Region 2 capability has been developed on the Spirent U-ATS UMTS Automatic Test System platform, which also has 26 RF test cases from the 3GPP TS 34.121 specification approved by the GCF (Global Certification Forum).

ITU Region 2 covers the Americas and the Caribbean. The Region 2 band, also known as UMTS1900, will initially be used for deployment of 3G W-CDMA in the North American market. Tests for this band will undergo validation for approval by the PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board). The 3GPP RF test cases supplied with the U-ATS system have been verified with several top-tier Region 2 W-CDMA terminals. This includes transmitter, receiver and performance test cases defined in TS 34.121.

"We believe this is the first commercially-available system to automatically test a terminal's RF performance in the UMTS1900 band, offering a comprehensive platform to terminal manufacturers and carriers looking to successfully deploy W-CDMA in North America," said Rob Van Brunt, vice president of marketing for Spirent Communications' Wireless division.

The U-ATS system with Region 2 capability is available in both the U-ATS Conformance System and the U-ATS FLEX Systems. The U-ATS Conformance System is a comprehensive, fully-automated test solution that runs industry-standard 3GPP test cases for formal RF conformance testing. It includes Spirent's physical layer performance analysis tools to ensure that terminals are tested under representative real-world conditions. The system is driven from Spirent's TestDrive UMTS test executive software for seamless test configuration and execution without any requirement for scripting or programming.

The U-ATS FLEX System configurations also support Region 2. These flexible, scalable system configurations address a wide range of applications and budgets. FLEX Systems enable customization of industry-standard test cases and the creation of user-defined tests for focused testing during development, integration and design verification of 3G W-CDMA terminals.

U-ATS forms a complete range of solutions suitable for all phases of W-CDMA terminal design, development and deployment.
