TIM aim for 47% share of 3G market by end 2006

June 5, 2005

Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) expects to have around a 50% share of the 3G mobile phone service market in Italy by the end of 2006.

Chief executive Marco De Benedetti said in an interview with the daily Il Sole 24 Ore that TIM aims to have a 3G market share 'similar or higher' than the company's current 47% market share of the 2G services by end 2006.

He went on to say that TIM expects half of the handsets it sells during the next Christmas period to be 3G compatible.

TIM's 3G service, based on UMTS technology, currently covers 60% of the population. De Benedetti said the 3G coverage will rise to 80% at the end of 2007 but it will take four to six years to have a coverage similar to the 2G network.
