Sweden's PTS postpones 3G fines

June 19, 2005

Sweden's three 3G operators will not face immediate fines despite failing to meet rollout requirements for 3G mobile networks.

Operators were required to have 3G network coverage for 98% of the Swedish population by 2003 but had only managed 85% coverage by January 2005.

The Post and Telecommunications Board (PTS) will postpone fining Hi3G Access AB, Tele2 AB and Vodafone Sweden for missing the rollout deadline. Instead that it would give them the opportunity to complete the rollout with a more commercially viable technology, as long as it does not mean an inferior service.

Hi3G Access now plans to introduce network based on CDMA technology in the 450 MHz frequency band. This would significantly cut the cost for the operator to complete the rollout of 3G.
