LG selects Red Bend FOTA solution for 3G handsets
June 30, 2005
Red Bend Software, a provider of firmware over-the-air (FOTA) update
solutions for mobile devices, announced it has signed a global agreement
with LG Electronics to deploy its vCurrent Mobile FOTA update technology
on LG 3G handsets. Red Bend's technology will allow LG Electronics
to quickly, reliably and cost-effectively deliver firmware updates
over the air to its most advanced mobile devices.
LG Electronics 3G handsets, which provide greater bandwidth and support video telephony, multimedia messaging services (MMS) and other sophisticated applications, are deployed by major network operators in Asia, Europe and North America. According to industry analysts, LG Electronics is the world's fourth largest mobile handset manufacturer and is expanding rapidly.
Mobile device manufacturers and network operators are implementing FOTA solutions in order to generate very compact firmware update packages that install quickly, reliably and securely on mobile devices already in the hands of users. These solutions, which are being deployed in volume in all major markets in 2005, allow handset makers and operators to reduce support costs, improve customer service, and more rapidly deliver new services and features to customers.
"Following an extensive evaluation, LG Electronics recognized that Red Bend's technology was suited to meet the needs of their 3G handsets," said Yoram Salinger, president and CEO of Red Bend Software. "LG Electronics and other leading mobile device manufacturers see the value that our unique FOTA expertise and global support can deliver."
