D-LINK launches wireless internet camera with 3G support

June 27, 2006

D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for the business and consumer markets, announced the launch of the Securicam DCS-2120 Wireless Internet Camera. Developed for home or small office use, the DCS-2120 provides the ability to remotely view live video and listen to sound from a 3G mobile phone or PDA in real time from anywhere within a mobile's 3G service area. Complete with CPU and web server, the DCS-2120 camera also features a low light sensitive lens ideal for night-time use and 4x digital zoom capability. The camera comes with free surveillance management software that can control up to sixteen cameras viewable from a single computer screen.

A snapshot facility means that images can be captured directly from a web browser to a computer hard drive without installing any additional software.

Furthermore, motion detection triggered recording and scheduled recording means that images are only recorded to a computer hard drive when motion is detected or a recording has been pre-scheduled. This saves disk space and eliminates the time wasted to view unnecessary images. Motion detection can also be set to activate e-mail alerts when movement is sensed, capturing still images and sending them to an email account for fast, efficient security.

The DCS-2120 IP camera features a built-in web-based interface for ease of use and control. For effective and flexible surveillance in and around a building, the camera comes with a built-in 802.11.g wireless network interface and includes a 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet port that is provided for convenient connection to an Ethernet network, or broadband Internet via a gateway router.

The DCS-2120 supports resolutions up to 640x480 at up to 30 frames per second.

"With the increased adoption of 3G mobile phones the DCS-2120 wireless internet camera provides true mobile security for the home and business. The applications are vast when you think that you can now view live video streams via any compatible 3G phone, PDA or web browser from anywhere in the world. This could be anything, ranging from baby monitoring to seeing how your business is doing while you are at a remote location," explained Balvinder Singh Phull, Marketing Communications Manager UK and Ireland, D-Link. "I believe this is the first IP camera to offer support for 3G and, unlike many competitive products, the surveillance software is available for free and is supplied with the camera."

The DCS-2120 camera adheres to the Universal Plug-n-Play specification, which allows computers running Windows XP/ME to automatically recognize the camera and add it to the network, making this camera easy to install and integrate in any network. It can be accessed and viewed from any network place as a device on the network. By signing up with one of the many free Dynamic DNS services available on the web, users can assign an easy-to remember name and domain to the camera (e.g. www.mycamera.myddns.com). This allows them to remotely access the camera without having to remember the IP address, even if their Internet Service Provider has changed it.

The DCS-2120 will be available from July 2006 and has a recommended retail price of GBP179.97 exclusive of VAT.
