Slovenian UMTS Process Gets under Waydate: 10th March 2001, source by: The Slovenian government has announced that it will grant 3 UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications System) licenses by tender valid for 15 years. The licenses will include the right to use the radio frequency of 1900-1980 MHz, 2010-2025 MHz and 2110-2170 MHz across the whole of Slovenia. An expert committee, appointed by the government, will award the licenses, based on financial, technical and business considerations. As regards the choice of the most advantageous tender, the following criteria will be considered: the level of the bid, proposed prices to customers for the services, the extent and velocity of the population and territory coverage, and the guarantee of international roaming. The Slovenian government has set its sights on receiving a large amount of revenue from the bids. The whole process will be supervised for correct conduct by several agencies, as well as the Slovenian Telecommunications body. UMTS is a system of third generation mobile and wireless communications, and belongs to the IMT-2000 (International mobile communications 2000) systems family. The UMTS/IMT-2000 services include mobile telephony, multimedia services, access to the Internet, intranet and other services based on Internet protocol, as well as data transfer services of up to 2Mbit/s.
