Handset hold-up for DoCoMo 3G launch

date: 13th March 2001, source by: FT

NTT DoCoMo president Keiji Tachikawa says only two of the 11 handset makers that signed contracts will be ready for the launch of the firm's third generation mobile phone service in May, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Matsushita Communications and NEC would launch four handsets between them, the paper said.

The firm had signed contracts for the launch of 16 handsets but some would take another two years to develop, the paper quoted Tachikawa as saying.

European makers Nokia and Ericsson were both absent from the list, despite spending several years developing the handsets in conjunction with DoCoMo, the paper said.
