Lucent Technologies announces new services to accelerate 3G wireless network

date: 19th March 2001, source by: Lucent

Lucent Technologies today announced a range of services designed to help mobile operators accelerate the introduction of 3G wireless networks and applications. These services will further reinforce the company's position as a leading provider of solutions for 3G networks, initially for UMTS. Lucent has installed more than 45,000 cell sites and over 160 networks world-wide that utilize the core technology necessary for the successful rollout of next-generation mobile networks, known as CDMA, according to a recent study.

The new services further reinforce the Lucent Mobile Experience offer portfolio, announced last week, which is an integrated set of software, products and services to enable mobile operators worldwide to offer users intuitive ways to access, select and use information any way they choose. These Lucent services have been developed to allow mobile operators to focus on managing their core competencies, while Lucent provides specialists with extensive networking skills that meet business objectives. Mobile operators want availability, scalability, security and performance. The services being introduced will help service providers meet these needs. Four different service offers are available initially, comprising:

* Mobile Internet Services - to identify and deploy compelling end-user services
* Integration Services for 3G Networks - to integrate 3G into existing networks and systems for early market entry
* Wireless Network Performance Optimisation Services - to ensure new-technology networks are optimised to deliver the quality and performance expected by consumers
* ASP Wireless Application Design and Management Services - to develop effective and secure applications and services that help maximise financial returns

The Mobile Internet Services offer includes business consulting to identify the correct applications needed, customer-specific service development, network trials and full network deployment. This allows clients to focus on their core business, while Lucent manages the overall integration of the network for platform consistency, connectivity, inter-operability, surveillance, management and network provisioning. To ensure new 3G networks work seamlessly with existing systems, the Integration Services offer includes technical assessment of existing systems, new network integration and testing, network surveillance and management, and IP core network design. This gives network operators complete network element connectivity and performance matched to business goals.

The Wireless Network Performance Optimisation Service offer helps ensure the best performance and utilisation of next-generation mobile communications, due to a combination of leading-edge analysis and simulation tools and skilled engineers. Only Lucent has the Bell Labs-developed OCELOT software system, which enables service providers to deploy networks rapidly in their optimal state and to optimise coverage and capacity as the networks evolve.

To ensure application service providers can deliver to mobile users, Lucent's ASP Wireless Application Design and Management Services offer helps ensure that installed applications, information and systems operate effectively within new 3G networks. The offer includes application design, management, implementation and integration to migrate applications to UMTS. The introduction of these new services complements the other efforts within Lucent to support the development and introduction of next-generation mobile networks and applications. These efforts include the Full Circle initiative to facilitate network development across the industry and the Lucent Mobile Internet Cooperative InnovationsSM affiliate program to foster ready-made 3G applications and services through collaborations with applications developers and software providers.
