KPN Yet to Choose UMTS Equipment Provider

date: 25 March 2001, source by: Reuters

Dutch KPN Telecom on Sunday said it had not yet chosen a telecommunications equipment provider to build its UMTS mobile phone network and that it would not reveal any provider choices at a news conference planned for Monday.

A spokesman for KPN's German mobile phone unit E-Plus denied a report in magazine Focus Money saying KPN had decided to award U.S. telecoms equipment giant Lucent Technologies Inc. a contract worth just under one billion euros to build its UMTS network.

The spokesman said the decision over the award had not yet been made.

Focus Money said KPN would announce the contract with Lucent on Monday to build the third-generation network in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

KPN, which owns a controlling stake in E-Plus, plans to release its 2000 results on Monday.
