Ericsson Unveils 3G Technology in India

date: 26 March 2001, source by: NewsBytes

In a spectacular '3G Tour Transcontinental-ON AIR Show' in New Delhi, Ericsson, the world's leading communications supplier, demonstrated its 3G mobile capabilities.

The show, which has travelled 41 countries, has for the first time in India demonstrated the opportunities of mobile Internet using 3G technology. The company also committed to set up a 'Developers Zone' to enable faster development and adoption of mobile Internet applications in India.

3G holds immense potential for various businesses including network operators, ISPs, IT hardware and software vendors, system integrators and most importantly the consumers who will be able to access a host of applications on their mobile phones.

International experts from Ericsson showcased the company's unique capabilities to deliver end-to-end solutions through 3G for any conceivable mobile application. Ericsson has bagged 26 of the 43 officially announced 3G orders worldwide.

Commenting on the significance of 3G technology in India, Jan Campbell, managing director, Ericsson Communications Ltd, said, "As convergence of telecom and Internet becomes a reality in India, the cellular operators in the country are currently investing in infrastructure to gradually migrate from GSM to GPRS. However, over the next 3-4 years there is going to be an inherent need for faster and richer content through mobile Internet which is going to be fulfilled by the 3G technology."

The planned developers' zone will provide the backend infrastructure and support to develop wireless content and applications based on WAP, GPRS, Bluetooth and 3G. The company claims to have over 40 percent of the GSM infrastructure market in the country.

The Indian mobile industry is going to experience exponential growth in the next three to four years. The government has allowed the third and fourth cellular operator and has also opened limited mobility through CDMA technology.
