LG Telecom to Resume Bids for IMT-2000 Service

date: 26 March 2001, source by: Chosun

LG Telecom, the telecommunications unit of the LG group, said Saturday that it is willing to participate in third-generation IMT-2000 mobile service if the government relaxes its business licensing requirements and if other financially-strong firms join the company¡¯s consortium to launch the 3G service. According to a high-ranking LG Telecom official Saturday, the firm is ready to move ahead regardless of the technological standards, CDMA or W-CDMA.

One state requirement for the IMT-2000 service license requires the prospective service provider to contribute as much as W1.5 trillion to the government for the spectrum use. The LG group failed to earn the government license for the W-CDMA service in an auction held late last year.
