Lucent Introduces CDMA2000 Base Station Systems Designed for Easy Migration to Future Wireless Technologiesdate: March 10, 2002 Lucent Technologies introduced two CDMA2000 base station systems designed to help mobile operators increase capacity and protect their network investment as they migrate to next-generation technologies. Verizon Wireless is the first customer to deploy these new products, which are the first CDMA base stations to be introduced as part of Lucent's Flexent OneBTS base station portfolio for 3G wireless networks. The Lucent Flexent CDMA Modular Cell 3.0 is the most recent addition to Lucent's best-selling line of CDMA base stations. This base station platform can incorporate power distribution and battery back-up within the base station, reducing the size of the cell site equipment footprint by 33% and can grow to support more radio frequency carriers, increasing capacity for mobile operators. The second system introduced today, the Flexent CDMA High-Density (HD) 3.0, is a base station growth cabinet designed for mobile operators with existing Lucent AUTOPLEX Series II cellular base stations. It preserves their investment in the AUTOPLEX systems by enabling them to reuse much of the equipment - including antennas, filters and amplifiers - while increasing capacity by adding the new HD 3.0 cabinet. Both the Modular Cell 3.0 and HD 3.0 can be upgraded to support the Flexent OneBTS digital radio shelf, which will support new technologies still in development via upgrade kits, including: - intelligent antennas -- multiple antenna and amplifier technology that provides incremental capacity and coverage improvements as demand requires, without the need for additional base stations; - dual band/mixed mode capabilities -- base station can support various combinations of both 850 and 1900 MHz spectrum and UMTS and CDMA2000 in the same cabinet; - cross-carrier channel sharing -- technology that increases capacity by enabling channel card elements within the base station to handle traffic across multiple sectors or carriers. The Modular Cell 3.0 is available in both indoor and outdoor versions and can support cdmaOne, CDMA2000 1X voice and data and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in 1900 and 850 MHz spectrum. The outdoor version of the Modular Cell 3.0 for 1900 MHz will be generally available in May 2002, while the indoor version and the 850 MHz outdoor and indoor versions will be ready in August 2002. This system can be deployed alongside existing AUTOPLEX and Modular Cell 1.0 and 2.0 base station platforms to increase cell site capacity and provide support for future technologies. The HD 3.0 is an indoor system for 850 MHz spectrum that supports cdmaOne, CDMA2000 1X voice and data and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, while allowing the existing Series II cellular systems to support analog capabilities. It will be generally available later this month in North America with international availability to follow.
