KDDI to Launch cdma2000 1x as Planneddate: March 11, 2002 Japan's KDDI announced on Monday it will launch 3G mobile phone service on April 1 in Japan as initially planned. With the arrival of the service, KDDI hopes to challenge the nation's top mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo and try to stay ahead of J-Phone, Japan Telecom's wireless unit, which has recently been outpacing KDDI in signing new users to its mobile Internet services. KDDI's 3G service uses a different technology from NTT DoCoMo's 3G commercial service, which began as a world first in October in the Tokyo area. Called cdma2000 1X, the KDDI service is expected to be used by global mobile operators in 12 nations, including Sprint Corp. in the United States and South Korea's LG Telecom. KDDI president Tadashi Onodera said the company hopes to ship 7 million 3G handsets by March 2003. The company will start out with five new 3G models manufactured by Sanyo Electric, Casio Computer, Toshiba and Kyocera.
