3G Americas to Represent Global Technologies in The Americas; Cingular CTO Bill Clift Elected as Chairmandate: March 13, 2002 A new global wireless trade organization focusing on the Americas and embracing the world's most popular wireless technologies will be called "3G Americas" and Bill Clift, Chief Technical Officer for Cingular Wireless, will serve as its first chairman. 3G Americas will be headquartered in Bellevue, Washington and represent the five principle wireless technologies of the Americas: GSM, TDMA, GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS. With some of the world's largest wireless operators and vendors as its members, the organization will work collaboratively on regulatory and technical issues for the benefit of customers throughout the Americas. The founding members of the new limited liability corporation include AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Compaq, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel Networks, Openwave Systems, Rogers AT&T Wireless, Siemens, and Telecom Personal. "3G Americas will provide a forum for its members to discuss and promote the fastest growing wireless technologies in the United States," said Clift. "The founding members -- carriers, infrastructure providers and device manufacturers -- will be able to provide a framework to ensure the success of these technologies in the Americas. The group will also be able to focus on other areas of common interest such as spectrum planning and regulatory issues." The senior operating officer of the organization will be Chris Pearson, Executive Vice President, a wireless industry veteran formerly of the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC). Pearson emphasized, "3G Americas has a unique opportunity to unify the Americas wireless industry by providing one voice to represent the five leading technologies. This new organization -- bringing both major vendors and operators together -- will enhance the prospects for wireless growth throughout the Americas as we move toward 3G wireless data services." website: http://www.3gamericas.org
