Redknee Introduces WLAN Gateway for GPRS/UMTS Networks

date: March 13, 2002

Redknee, the worldwide leader in Open Services Architecture (OSA) solutions, announced the availability of their Wireless LAN Gateway. The WLAN gateway provides the ability for mobile network subscribers to access email and web services using WLAN technology integrated with GPRS and UMTS networks.

The solution compliments the wide-area data coverage provided by GPRS and UMTS networks and addresses key requirements for a successful WLAN market acceptance. Redknee's WLAN gateway is an economical solution that easily integrates into multi-vendor networks providing a fourth-generation wireless environment.

"Carriers gain revenue benefit by offering subscribers broadband access to messaging and web services using WLAN networks" said Lucas Skoczkowski, COO for Redknee Inc. "Redknee's WLAN gateway provides operators the ability to bill subscribers for convenient WLAN broadband wireless data access without taxing the spectrum of UMTS and 3G networks."

With Redknee's WLAN gateway, high-speed wireless data connections become simple, affordable, secure and reliable. Subscribers will receive a single bill for voice and data even while roaming. Charges associated with WLAN services can be charged to either post or pre-paid accounts, and can also be sent to a GSM roaming partner. In addition to offering mobile customers high-speed wireless access, network operators also have the flexibility to offer high-speed data access to non-subscribers or casual users through prepaid vouchers and credit-card payment systems. With Redknee's WLAN gateway solution wireless providers will have the opportunity to compete with broadband wireless delivery.

"Redknee's WLAN gateway is an innovative solution that ties together IP access with GSM signaling for UMTS and GPRS networks," stated Bohdan Zabawskyj, head of Redknee's production evolution. "Redknee's WLAN gateway is an 802.11 or HIPERLAN framework for GSM-based access control, authorization, authentication, rating and billing."
