1X cubed: Nokia unveils its equation for CDMA2000 1X handsetsdate: March 18, 2002 Nokia today unveiled its first three phones designed to take advantage of new CDMA2000 1X networks. The Nokia 6370 and Nokia 6385 phones represent Nokia's newest entries into the CDMA business-class market, offering users a fully featured CDMA2000 1X handset in a classically designed package. For the image-conscious entry-level market, the Nokia 3585 phone with Java support combines expressive new styling with a feature set designed for the fun-at-heart. Each of these three new handsets is based on Nokia's own CDMA2000 1X chipset design. The Nokia 6370 phone is expected to begin shipping during the second quarter of 2002, while the Nokia 6385 and Nokia 3585 phones are expected to ship during the second half of 2002. Soren Petersen, CDMA vice president and general manager for Nokia, said, "Consumers have embraced Nokia's products, and as CDMA carriers evolve toward the third generation, Nokia is well positioned to continue this success with the introduction of our first CDMA2000 1X products." Nokia 6370 and Nokia 6385 Phones Both the Nokia 6370 and Nokia 6385 phones offer CDMA carriers the opportunity to realize the benefits of their new CDMA2000 1X voice networks. For the mobile professional seeking to access data while on the go, the Nokia 6385 also includes support for 1X high-speed packet data. Users can access information using the built-in wireless Internet browser, or connect the Nokia 6385 to a PC via either the infrared port or an optional data cable and conduct e-mail sessions or access Internet and corporate intranet information. With a full complement of features, including advanced voice functionality, 2-way text messaging and a built in wireless Internet browser, the Nokia 6370 and Nokia 6385 phones are designed for the wireless business professional. A large phonebook holding up to 500 contacts with multiple entry fields and extensive calendar and to-do list functions add to the business orientation of these phones. Nokia 3585 Phone As Nokia's first CDMA handset with supporting J2ME, the Nokia 3585 phone goes a step beyond voice communication with support for 1X packet data, giving users the ability to download and run a variety of Java applications based on the Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0). This capability allows users to quickly transform the functionality of their wireless phone by downloading and launching their selection of entertainment, productivity or business applications. Users can also access Internet content over the high-speed data network using the built in XHTML (WAP 2.0) browser, which allows for an improved wireless browsing experience. Along with support for multi-channel MIDI ring tones and an exciting new collection of 'FUNctional' Xpress-on covers, including new designs with integrated electroluminescent lights, the Nokia 3585 phone becomes even more customizable as the first Nokia phone in the Americas with Nokia's innovative new Pop-Port interface connector. This new interface connector supports features such as a USB data connection, stereo audio and power output. Nokia will gradually open parts of this interface and license the specifications to accessory and phone manufacturers. This will allow for an even greater range of exciting accessory products from third party manufacturers experienced in such areas as music, entertainment and imaging.
