Nissan and DoCoMo in 3G telematics tie-update: March 19, 2002 NTT DoCoMo and Japan's second biggest car-maker Nissan have said they are planning to jointly develop 3G mobile applications and telematics services for vehicles. The initial phase of the service will consist of relevant information for drivers delivered to mobiles and other wireless information devices such as GPS and only by 2004 will wireless connectivity be integrated into Nissan vehicles. With the deal Nissan would be hoping to match the service currently being offered by Fiat, where car occupants can contact an information unit and receive details on route guidance, traffic, weather and the location of essential places, such as filling stations, chemists, hotels, restaurants. According to Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn, the company is still undecided about whether the services will be offered outside Japan. However, DoCoMo chief executive Keiji Tachikawa has indicated that the Japanese operator has plans to work with other firms on similar projects.
