Siemens Build Networks in South of UK and Nokia in the Northdate: March 20, 2002 Siemens said on Tuesday it had replaced Nokia as supplier for the construction of the southern part of Hutchison 3G's mobile network in the UK. Rather than building the 3G network in the north of Britain, Siemens, working together with its Japanese partner NEC is now building the network in the south of England, including London, a spokesman said. Nokia is building the northern part of the network instead. Nokia said the swap took place over six months ago, had been by mutual agreement, and that the value of its part of the deal and the size of the market served by the northern network were the same as the southern. The roll-out of the network was on schedule, a spokeswoman from Nokia added. A spokesman for Hutchison 3G said in terms of value, the contract was still equally divided between the two companies. Siemens, however, said the southern network was a bigger contract than the northern part, but declined to give further details.
