The company also said it has slated US$3.2 billion for capital expenditure on its third-generation wireless operations in Europe in 2002, up from US$1.1 billion the previous year.

Speaking to the press, the company's managing director, Canning Fok, said the figure covers total spending for the five 3G networks the company is building in Europe.

In addition to Italy and the U.K., Hutchison has secured licenses to build 3G networks in Austria, Sweden, and Denmark.
