Viag's 3G launch by summer 2003date: March 21, 2002 Peter Erskine, mmO2 CEO, expressed confidence that its German unit Viag Interkom will be rollout 3G by summer next year, although he doubted whether there will eventually be six 3G operators in Germany. But meeting the schedule depended on the availability of dual mode handsets, so much so that if the handsets were ready before the planned launch date, Viag will go ahead with the launch before summer. mmO2 also seems to be in no doubt that Viag, now renamed O2, Telfort and genie will breakeven in the next financial year ending March 2003. According to Erskine, the company is keen to increase its market share in Germany "from the current 7 per cent by one percentage point per year for the next five years to gain 12 per cent share." Erskine indicated that mmO2 was hoping to roll out 3G services almost simultaneously across all its networks where investments in licenses and network have been made.
