Sonera to launch UMTS services in Finland on September 26date: March 22, 2002 Sonera Corporation will launch the first UMTS services in Finland on September 26, 2002. The commercial launch will at first be limited to certain key areas. Sonera’s services will be among the first UMTS services launched in Europe Since January 1, 2002, Sonera’s UMTS network has been operational in the Greater Helsinki area, Tampere, Turku and Oulu. The test network opened at the beginning of this year is the first UMTS network in Europe that covers several towns. When UMTS terminals become available next autumn, Sonera will start to provide the first UMTS services for consumers. UMTS is a technology that enables versatile visual services with faster data-speed than before. In future, it will be possible, for example, to transmit video and use real-time multimedia services. Nokia will deliver a significant part of Sonera’s UMTS network. The two companies have long been cooperating in order to launch third generation services. Sonera will construct its UMTS network utilizing its existing GSM and GPRS network in the building of the core network to a great extent. New investments will mainly be directed to the building of the radio network.
