Police in Japan to use 3G to help fight crimedate: March 25, 2002 In response to the ever-increasing concerns about crime relating to mobile phones, it seems that now the mobile phone could be starting to fight back on street crime. Police in Osaka, Japan, are asking witnesses of crimes to use photo or video functions on their 3G handsets to snap pictures of criminals in action to help in the hunt and prosecution of these villains. A special phone line has been set up for subscribers to send images to as soon as they have been taken. The initiative is designed to tackle the increase in street crime and snatch-and-grab cases in Osaka City. It is expected that the emergency line will be launched in April. Of course in theory this is a very good, public-spirited idea, but 3G Bulletin believes that with more expensive 3G phones now available, getting a videophone out to film a criminal in the act may be the provocation they need to steal your phone.
