Nokia said the 6650 would be the biggest selling 3G phone
March 12, 2003
The head of Nokia's mobile phone division, Anssi Vanjoki, said
at the CeBit event held in Germany that the Nokia 6650 made by the
Finnish company would be Europe's biggest selling WCDMA 3G phone.
"WCDMA is starting this year and the most sold phone is going to
be the 6650", he said in a press conference at the show.
However, a mobile phone reviewer disagreed with Anssi Vanjoki at
the show and said, "One of the main selling point of 3G is videoconferencing
and the 6650 does not have it…I don't believe it will be a big selling
phone."
The Nokia 6650 weighting in at 141g comes with a built-in camera
for shooting video at over 10 frames per second, a 4096-colour display,
and MMS capability for sending and receiving clips. The 6650 is
the first 3G phone launched by the company and has a dual-mode ability
that allows it to work in both GSM 900/1800 and in WCDMA network.
Nokia unveiled the 6650 late last year but has fallen behind their
Asia rivals in introducing new 3G handsets. The company in which
it is particularly lacking behind is Japan's NEC Corp that has already
launched seven WCDMA handsets in Asia and Europe.
