The new P2101V nearly sold out
March 17, 2003
Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that NTT DoCoMo's new P2101V
3G FOMA handset was nearly sold out on its first day of sale on
Saturday, 15th March.
The handset, capable of handling videoconference calls, are estimated
to have shipped 8,000 to 10,000 units in Japan and 95% has already
been sold, citing inside sources.
A retail outlet in the Tochigi region reported brisk sale. "All
our 60 new P2101V handsets has all been sold out within 3 hours
of launch and the next shipment would not arrive until late March,
" said a shop manager.
Demand for the handset signals a possible upturn in sales of FOMA
cell phones, which have been slumping for over a year.
The new handset made by Panasonic Mobile comes with a display monitor
that can swivel, just like the ones used in video cameras. This
allows teleconference calls and photographs to be taken at different
angles.
The phone, which retails for around 35,000 yen, also features a
battery life of 250 hours, double that of earlier FOMA models.
DoCoMo initially targeted sales of 1.38 mln FOMA handsets by the
end of March 2003, but has sold only 220,000 units so far. "We will
fight to the last to meet our new sales target of 320,000 units
by March-end," said President Keiji Tachikawa.
