Motorola Expands CDMA 1X Portfolio with 1xEV-DO Solution for Increased Capacity

March 17, 2003

Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) announced the expansion of its CDMA2000 1X portfolio with the introduction of a standards-based CDMA 1xEV-DO solution. Motorola’s CDMA 1xEV-DO solution enables operators to increase their capability to offer new services for data and multimedia applications to end-users. In addition, the Motorola “data only” offering is focused on minimizing operators’ initial investment and total cost-of-ownership, lowering the risk to existing 1X networks and supporting multi-vendor deployments.

Motorola’s 1xEV-DO solution is highly integrated into its CDMA2000 1X systems and leverages existing Base Transceiver Subsystem (BTS) product offerings through a new 1xEV-DO Multi-channel CDMA card. It also uses existing Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server, cell sites, towers and antennas to enable a smooth migration from CDMA2000 1X to 1xEV-DO.

Motorola’s 1xEV-DO offering provides effective cost management through planned network upgrades that will integrate with customers’ current 1X networks to maximize the re-use of their existing infrastructure equipment. The solution also enables customers to deploy a 1xEV-DO solution in the near-term while either migrating to 1xEV-DV in the future or enhancing their network with further 1xEV-DO solutions.

“Motorola is committed to utilizing open standards and tools to create systems that enhance the lifestyles of wireless Internet users and help operators and service providers take full advantage of this investment in the future,” said Raghu Rau, corporate vice president of Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS). “With 1xEV-DO, mobile data subscribers can enjoy faster access to Internet, m-commerce and corporate intranets.”

1xEV-DO technology not only brings a superior user experience in wireless access to the Internet, but also enables a series of new applications and services. These new applications will enable new wireless devices, which combine traditional cellular telephony with new capabilities, such as digital cameras, music and video terminals.

With 1xEV-DO, consumers will have anywhere, anytime high-speed access to information on the Internet, or to special content offered by wireless operators, including location-based services. This will allow subscribers to preview a clip of a movie that’s playing at a local movie theater while dining at a restaurant. The high speeds offered by 1xEV-DO will also enhance the experience for the business users by enabling high-speed access to corporate networks, e-mail or other business applications.

Motorola’s 1xEV-DO solution is designed to achieve peak data rates of up to 2.4 Mbps within the same 1.25MHz spectrum used in today's CDMA networks. The higher capacity of the 1xEV-DO system accommodates a larger number of users at higher data rates, thereby increasing the revenue potential for operators.
