DoCoMo 2G ARPU is higher than those of 3G
March 19, 2003
Japan's biggest mobile-phone company NTT DoCoMo generates less
ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) from customers on FOMA 3G wireless
service that enable video-conferencing and high-speed Internet access
than those on conventional 2G i-mode service, the Financial Times
Deutschland reported, citing board member Takanori Utano.
"Data revenues per customer are below those that we have with
the
systems of the second generation," the paper quoted Utano as saying.
There aren't enough applications for 3G technology, the FTD said.
"The attraction of developing applications is not large enough
given
the low customer total," Utano told the paper.
NTT DoCoMo 3G ARPU was 10,400 Yen ($77.8) per month from October
to December 2001 - around 25% higher than the 8,500 Yen for the
current imode service.
However with the expensive video communication novelty disappearing,
the average monthly ARPU in 2002 for FOMA dropped to 8,300 Yen
while
i-mode's ARPU reminded static.
NTT DoCoMo started commercial operation of its FOMA3G network on
the 1st October 2001.
