Nokia to win second deal in Singapore
March 19, 2003
Nokia is set to win a second of three contracts with local telecommunications
companies to install 3G infrastructure in Singapore, the Business
Times reports. It is also in the running to win the third contract.
Nokia has signed a letter of intent with StarHub, the smallest
mobile operator in Singapore, for high-speed wireless network infrastructure,
a deal which comes on top of Nokia's existing contract with MobileOne,
the city-state's second largest mobile operator.
Nokia has also been shortlisted for a third - by Singapore Telecommunications,
the newspaper adds, which could potentially be the most lucrative.
SingTel is Singapore's biggest mobile operator with about 50% market
share, and has pitted Nokia against Ericsson and a consortium comprising
Siemens IC Mobile, NEC Corp. and Itochu Corp. SingTel is expected
to announce the winner from the shortlist by the middle of this
year.
The size of the 3G contracts for StarHub and SingTel wasn't given.
